The Big Exchange was co-founded by The Big Issue to allow you greater access, support, and choice when trying to do good with your money. For investing, that meant simplifying the marketplace by only showing you funds that proved their sustainability claims were legitimate. It’s an extension of The Big Issue’s aims of self-help through empowering people.
Our approach is to only give our customers access to actively-managed investments that have the intention to make a positive contribution to society and/or the environment.
The word intention is key — it means a positive contribution can’t just happen by accident. The people managing the investment on your behalf (investment managers) have to have a clear strategy and process in place to make this change happen and the underlying investments need to back that up! The funds you choose are there because they aim to make both a financial return for you and a social and environmental one at the same time.
We haven’t stayed still. We know that this area is changing fast both to combat the rising wave of greenwashing as well as through the introduction of new data, new issues, and new products.

Our Impact Committee meet quarterly to make sure that our process remains robust, to encourage The Big Exchange to be strict and to provide new data to customers, where relevant. That’s why we now have a Fossil-Free Filter and a Female-Led Filter on the platform. You can see which funds don’t invest in any companies making money from fossil fuels as well as those funds, led, managed and co-managed by women.
There is a lot of choice for investors choosing what to do with their ISA these days. Many existing providers have added on “Ethical” or “Sustainable” options, but it isn’t their sole focus. The Big Exchange do one thing and one thing only because we believe it is the way forward – both for long term investors, as well as for the environment and society.
